Week 1 - God in all things

New Title

Our theme for the first week of Lent is God in all things.

Bible reading: John 1.1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

Prayer

I ask God, the Father, to give me an intimate knowledge of the many gifts I have received,

so that filled with gratitude for all, I may in all things love and serve the Divine Majesty.

Reflection by Dan Tyndall

The journey we are on through this pandemic is to name and to know God in all things: when we feel supported and sustained; when we feel hurt, damaged, betrayed; when we hurt, damage or betray; when we support, uphold and sustain.

God is not selective in where the divine spark is kindled; God is not selective in whom the divine spark is kindled; God is not selective in the hoping and the yearning for a future that is not determined by your past, for a future that embraces and reconciles everything that you are, a future that is unfolding before you; a future that has yet to be defined

For God is neither the beginning of our journey nor our journey’s end – rather the journey is travelled in and with and through God, and God is both our origin and our destination, our creation and our re-creation – for all we are is found deep in the heart of God and the heart of God is to be found deep in the heart of you and me.

Which is why the invitation to the journey of faith challenges innate cynicism, scepticism and pride with an invitation to an adventure in creativity, curiosity and wonder at discovering God in all things.

We've seen lots of amazing work in the visitor services department so far this year. SMR stewards have generated over £4,500 donations between January and April 2026 and welcomed over 5000 visitors to the Church. We are welcoming new tour guides to the front of house team with the eventual goal to expand the number of tours we are able to offer to the public. Janet and Reuben have both done their first tours and have received wonderful reviews from visitors. If you are interested in volunteering on the front of house team please contact me on lucy.marshall@stmaryredcliffe.co.uk . We have had some amazing feedback from our outreach events as we aim to welcome not only those familiar with SMR but also those that have never been before. These have included film screenings, talks and most recently the Redcliffe Sessions which raised just under £150 for our Lent charity partner, CALM. Thank you to all those who have supported these. The next Redcliffe Session will be in support of SMR and will feature Bristol band Dogsbody on guitar, cello and violin, and songwriter, Alex Pester on 13th June. I am very excited looking into the rest of 2026 for our future events run both in house and by external hirers, more information of which can be found on our website. If you are interested in volunteering at any future SMR events please let me know! Lucy Marshall Visitor Services Coordinator 06.05.2026
