Old picture of the day

An historical view of the nave

An late eighteenth/early nineteenth century view of the church from the west end of the nave, showing William Edney's iron gates in their original position at the back of the aisle (they are now positioned in the south entrance to St John's Chapel) and William Hogarth's altarpiece, The Sealing of the Tomb, in situ. The central panel, The Ascension, is visible. The two side panels, The Three Marys at the Tomb, and The Sealing of the Sepulchre, were hung at right angles on each side of the chancel.
