Support St Mary Redcliffe

The fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England - Queen Elizabeth I

St Mary Redcliffe relies on the generosity of parishioners and members of the public to keep our wonderful 800 year-old building operational. Below are details of live fundraising projects that will help us to preserve, develop and operate this masterpiece of medieval Gothic architecture ensuring that it is available for everyone to enjoy and preserved for the benefit of future generations.

A greener St Mary Redcliffe: Solar Power and Heat Pumps

This year we are moving ahead with plans to install solar panels on our roof that will provide all our energy for the summer months and help us substantially through the winter. This is part of a two-phase plan to in time take our heating system of gas and on to an Air Source Heat Pump system.

The last time we know a vicar climbed the spire was in 1872 during a thunderstorm when the spire was first completed. Our new Vicar, Brutus, recently in post, has some experience with heights having served with 2PARA and completed parachute training. He will, however, make this ascent without the safety of a parachute.

At the summit he will bless the weather vane as we will be taking our future energy from the sun, and after a very wet winter arriving in Bristol the vicar has lost some confidence in the West Country sunshine!

Please sponsor him as we aim to drive our magnificent grade one star listed building towards our net zero goal, take us off our wobbly gas heating which has let us down these last winters, and give us a sustainable and affordable energy future.
