North Bristol Foodbank
Name of the tree - ’No More Baked Beans’ Foodbank Christmas Tree
Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. North Bristol Foodbank has existed since August 2012 and we have 9 outlets across North Bristol and South Gloucestershire which includes our popup emergency foodbank in Redcliffe, in partnership with St Mary Redcliffe Church.
Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to a foodbank (but no pasta or baked beans please). Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need. Foodbanks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank e-voucher. Foodbank clients either have their foodbank parcel delivered to them or in non-COVID times, they arrive at an outlet where they will pick up three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or homemade cake and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term issues.
Since April 2020, North Bristol Foodbank has supported over 11,081 people, of which 4,893 were children, with foodbank parcels. This is a 94% increase in numbers from the same period last year. Many of those we have supported have been forced into financial hardship due to job loss, reduced income and little to no access to the support networks they would have had before COVID19.
