Channel Sea Scouts
The 255th Bristol , known as ‘Channel Sea Scouts, now in its 84th year continues to serve the young people of the Southville and surrounding communities providing a varied and challenging inclusive programme to our Beavers (6-8yrs.), Cubs (8-10 ½ years), and Scouts (10 ½-14 yrs.).
We are immensely proud of our youth members in demonstrating such true scouting spirit as they have continued to attain #Skills for Life in this very atypical year of 2020.
Undeterred by the cancellation of, camps, Jamborees, parades, and a greater part of our water sport activities, Channel met online, carrying out set challenges and activities that not only earned themselves badges but also benefitted others! Scouts contributed alongside Scouts and Guides in Avon to help start a scout troop at Ikoba School in Masindi Uganda. The group raised over £1000 for the Bristol based homeless charity 16-25 Independent People with a sponsored sleep out (in gardens).
This year’s annual St. George’s Day celebration took the form of a uniformed tribute to our NHS and key worker heroes.
Our Annual General Meeting held on Zoom was very well attended by families and saw record a record number of Scouts presented their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. We also celebrated two leaders who had completed their leader training in the lockdown.
As restrictions were eased in the summer the Scouts learned to sail, kayak, and paddleboard with tight Covid19 protocols. The Cubs cooked, and the Beavers learned new games all outside, all distanced, and with plenty of hand gel between sessions! To date we have yet to meet indoors!
We are surely keeping the outing in Scouting.
The leaders and parent workers have also been busy. Small socially teams have repaint and brand our storage shipping container, get the electricity and exterior lighting re-instated, and install a new sign at our HQ site.
We also managed to update freshen up our group website.

Plans are now afoot to renew our building project fund raising efforts. We hope to build the Spyglass Scout Centre, a two story HQ and boathouse and to further develop the site fit for future generations of scouts and leaders to carry on what we do.
This year our tree takes the form of a sailing ship. It is a positive statement of our intensions to sail forward towards a bright future.
From all at the Bristol ‘Channel’ Sea Scouts, we wish you a Happy and safe Christmas 2020.
Here’s to better 2021!
