Sunday School at St Mary Redcliffe
Sunday School takes place in the Undercroft during the 9:30 Eucharist. We all gather together at the start of the service with the rest of the congregation. After the Gloria, the children and their leaders leave with a prayer. Each session in the Undercroft begins with a welcoming song and prayer and then children move to their respective groups for the bible reading and activities.
We have nearly 100 children on our list, and about 30 – 35 attend each week in four groups; Sparks (for parents and pre-schoolers, and children in Reception), Candles (Years 2 - 3), Lamps (Years 4 and 5) and Fireworks (Years 6 - 8). We have also recently introduced a youth group for our teenagers. Whilst we encourage our Sunday School parents to stay in church, we do require parents of children under the age of four to accompany their children to the Undercroft, where they learn and worship together.
Our resources “Roots”, are based on the readings from the main service in church, and engage the children in a range of fun and interactive activities.
At the end of each session, the children and leaders come together to reflect on the morning’s activities and to say the Lord’s Prayer. Sunday School groups then return to church in time for communion, and then rejoin their families for the rest of the service.
Our Sunday School team consists of 14 dedicated and experienced Sunday School Teachers and five Assistant Leaders (all of whom have been through our Safer Recruitment process and DBS checks).
Once a month we have the First Sunday Service; this is a family service led by a member of the clergy, usually Kat our Associate Vicar; it is based on the structure of the service in church but with more child-friendly content.
All age services happen around 4 times a year, when the whole church family worships together for the whole service. We usually have an all-age service for Mothering Sunday, Patronal Festival, Harvest Festival and Christmas Day. These services are designed to be more engaging for children in the choice of music, readings and prayers, with a talk aimed at all ages. We often invite children to lead prayers or Bible readings in these services too.
Sunday School also organise a number of special occasions and social events for parents/carers and children throughout the year, including parents’ nights out, fundraising events, Good Friday activities, summer events and a pre-Christmas celebration.
